Wax Away

Pick a time that suits

Would rather not use the calendar?

Ring me and I will book you in myself. Some people would always rather speak to someone, and on an older phone or tablet the calendar above can be awkward.

How to book

Four ways to reach me, whichever suits

You book a time online, or by phone, text or email.

While I am there

Family members are welcome to stay throughout, but I will need as little conversation as possible while I am carrying out the procedure.

Just to reassure you: I have enhanced DBS checking in place, and as a retired district nurse I am very used to visiting people in their own homes.

What to tell me when you do

Where the client lives
The address, and which village or town it is in.
Any access details
A key safe, a door entry system — anything I will need to get in.
Whether the ear has ever been perforated, or had grommets
“Not sure” is a perfectly acceptable answer. Say so and I will check.
Whether they wear hearing aids
And roughly how long they have had them.

Before I visit

What I need, and what you need to do

None of it is difficult, but the oil drops genuinely matter — they are what softens the wax enough for me to get it out.

Mainly adults over 18. Children are generally seen by their GP first and referred to ENT.

What I will need when I arrive

  • The client can hold their head steady.
  • They need to be mobile enough to walk to a high back dining room chair.
  • I will need a table nearby to put my equipment on and access to one socket.
  • I will need access to a sink, soap and kitchen roll to wash and dry my hands.

Before I visit

  1. 1 The affected ear — or both, if both are affected — needs oil drops for five days before I come.
  2. 2 I recommend EAROL olive oil spray.
  3. 3 Tilt the head gently to one side, put a couple of squirts in, and massage it in gently.
  4. 4 No cotton wool afterwards. It only absorbs the oil you have just put in.
  5. 5 If the other ear needs doing too, wait ten minutes before starting it.

If the wax has not softened enough, I may not be able to remove it on the day and we may need a second visit.
